DEFENDING RELIGIOUS & SIMILAR BASIC LIBERTIES

Such as Freedom Of Speech, Belief, Conscience, Association, the Press, and Academic Freedom

Supporting liberties for Christians, other peaceful minority religions, and people of peace, and keeping legal doors open for the Church and for sharing the Gospel

14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” Romans 10:14-15

Jesus told his followers to “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:18-20

BIBLICAL CHRISTIAN WORLDVIEW ON RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

As Christians we are commanded to share the gospel with every tribe and every nation (Mk 16:15 ; Matt 28:18-20). Unfortunately, in the world today, many people are persecuted for their faith, and are prohibited by law from sharing the gospel. Christian advocates are needed to serve in the law and government sphere to keep legal doors open for sharing the gospel, allowing Christians to worship and live out their faith. Increasingly, cultures even in the West (Australia, America, and Europe) are becoming hostile to the gospel and religious expression, as cultural tides shift toward secularism. In other countries, threats to religious and related liberties come from other persecuting religions (Islam, etc.), governments, and secularist “anti-religions” (i.e., communism, etc.)

Religious Liberty/Freedom, or the “Free Exercise of Religion” (as it is called in the 1st Amendment, U.S. Constitution), is considered in many nations to be our First Liberty, but it never stands alone. It is inextricably tied to a host of similar, fundamental human liberties and freedoms (and part of a God-given, natural slate of human rights, to exercise these). Similar and related liberties include freedom of conscience, belief, worship, thought, speech, press, association, and academic freedoms, among many). Resources included here are accordingly aimed not just for the defense of religious liberty, but for the protection of these associated liberties, as well.

A Christian view on religious liberty should support that liberty for all religions, including those with non-Christian beliefs, or no religious beliefs at all, provided however, those religions or non-religions do not include actions that are destructive or injurious to other people, to their God-given natural/human, and civil rights, or to the common good (i.e., Satanic, pagan religions, and some others, that require human sacrifice and other destructive acts (consider Jihadist Islam), would not merit religious liberty for those acts, as easily infringing someone’s human rights, and as violating the common good). In pluralistic societies, this is sound thinking, but is sometimes challenging to implement. In our view, healthy discussion and debate should be allowed, including persuasive speech on religion. However, ultimately we believe that Christianity is true, and has the most to offer from an assortment of religious views in pluralistic societies. There is ultimate hope, purpose, vision, and a glorious eternal destiny for those that follow Jesus Christ.
